Kicking the ball, running, trying to get the ball, so on and so fort, I really can't appreciate it-not to mention the difficulty of scoring which for me then-was so boring to watch.
Well, in basketball, there's always action, there's always someone who is scoring. Those were my thoughts before. But that totally change when I experienced the 2006 FIFA World Cup in Germany.
Passionate fans from young ones to the elderly, all genders, races, share the same passion for football there. The fans painted their faces, with flags on their back chanting, and cheering for their country.
Our Filipino host families, were also football fans and always watching the matches. So we also watched.
Since then, I slowly started to appreciate the game and the skills that comes with it. I have my favorite teams too.
In the World Cup, my favorite team is England. And I started to enjoy and feel the intensity of the matches since I have a team already.
One of the most unforgettable matches when we were in Germany was the match between host Germany and Argentina during the quarterfinals. The Argentinians scored first which send the whole Germany into silence. Then just before the match was about to end, Miroslav Klose scored a goal and that sent the whole country screaming and shouting. I can't forget that moment. And I guess that's one of the major matches that made me appreciate the beauty of the game- the passion of the fans.
Now, It is one of my favorite sports. In the Champions League and La Liga, my favorite team or club is Real Madrid-and I always root for England during the World Cup and Euro.
Football indeed is a beautiful game, and is one way of uniting countries together.
The reason I wrote this is because, in the Philippines now, the sport is slowly becoming popular. And we are now starting to be competitive in international competitions.
In my next post, I'll talk about the Philippine national football team.
How about you? What are your thoughts about this beautiful game?
