25 Reasons Why You Should Not Date a Traveler

by Regin Reyno

It's Valentine month again. I came up with an idea of posting something about Valentine-so I decided to post something about dating a traveler.

How about dating a traveler? Check this out.

       1. The flag patches on his backpack will make you insecure. 30 patches of different flags, including Nepal and Bolivia.
      2. On a dinner date, he’ll be talking about his recent expedition in Malacca, while you are forced to Google where in the world is Malacca, on your iPhone.

      3. He knows lots of people, especially different nationalities that he has met on the road. You may be forced to think that he may leave you in a twinkling of an eye, once he meets a hotter German one day.

      4. You are talking about marriage while his thoughts are on a trekking trip on the Inca trail to Machu Picchu.

      5. You’ll be forced to scale Mt. Kilimanjaro, the highest peak in Africa-even though you have acrophobia.

      6. You dream of building a house. He dreams of building a trail.

      7. Your usual dinner dates in posh restaurants will be replaced by dates on the street; feasting on local food, because he is saving money for his next expedition and he wants to experience the local culture as much as possible.

      8. He spends time updating his blog and answering questions from people who want to travel to where he has been. He becomes a travel counselor, nevertheless, for free.

      9. On your vacation trip, you will stay in a dorm room full of stinking and snoring budget travelers. On other days, he contents himself of sleeping in a hammock overnight.

      10. He’ll take you to a 15-hour bus ride.

      11. Your oceanarium dream of watching sharks through a glass will be replaced by an actual dive with whale sharks in Donsol, Philippines.

      12. He will tell you every city’s history that you visit. You will be forced to  pretend to know that you are interested, even if the only thing that you like in that city is the mall.

      13. His skin is as tan as the Badjaos of southern Philippines, due to endless walking under the heat of the sun, just to save a penny. (No offense to the Badjaos)

      14. He wears fisherman pants instead of Levi’s 501 for the simple reason of “going local”.

      15. He will talk to you about preserving the environment, wild animals, and local culture.

 16. Your dinner date topic will consist of politics, national treasures, UNESCO World Heritage sites, nature, and history.

      17. He’ll be spontaneous in his communication-a skill that was acquired on the road-and you’ll be challenged to equal it.

     18. You’ll be pressured to memorize all the capital cities of the world.

     19. His network is so vast: talking about pressure.

     20. He is always on the go. Full of energy and ruthless spirit.

  21. You’ll spend a lot of time at airports, which means increased pulse rate, annoying x-ray machines, unkind immigration officers, and endless queue.

   22. Additional things: recycled air, jet lag, turbulence, and lost baggage.

   23. Instead of buying you a dress, he’ll spend his savings in purchasing an Ultra Wide Angle lens for the sole purpose of capturing Banaue Rice Terraces.

   24. You will spend your Christmas volunteering to the orphans and land mine victims in Cambodia.

   25. You will be obliged to take a bath in every ice-cold water falls in Southeast Asia.

Do you still want to date a traveler?

   Happy Valentine to everyone!

  13. Great blog Regin...I sometimes see the look in a woman's eyes during dinner when travel is the topic of conversation. It's usually easy to figure out when a woman would backback or just resort to the resort.

Similar to returning from a trip. The photos are shown, the stories told, and you just can't wait to jump on facebook to talk to fellow travelers still traveling.

The world is a great book, of which, those who never stir from home read only a page.

  16. 5555 ! This is hilarious and SO TRUE! I defo have lived on 100 baht a week before just to save up for a trip! I would rather wear hippie pants any day of the week than real clothes and my perfect date is eating local cuisine in a street market talking about the next big adventure! :D

  21. So I checked that globogirls.com site it was a strange concept in the beginning but checking around I found out that it's actually a normal thing, lots of people travel around and wherever you go you might want to hook up with a nice girl wherever you go, they got this social travel network thing with articles where you can tag yourself as interested person to visit that place, I met 2 girls in a trip to east Europe and we got along now we meet once in a while when we can visit each other's town, all in all good site just you have to be realistic I guess, you must be interested yourself or have interesting ideas for girls (like invitation to show your town).
